Updates on Photographi08!

Dear friends of Photographi!

A few changes made to the exhibition set up today, ie 18th Oct: --
1. The exhibition setting up time has been pushed to 10pm(1 hour later than as planned before)
2. We have just been told that the Shopping Mall's Management allows only limited number of people(as we have to exchange for official passes to be allowed to stay there) there after the shopping centre closes for us to start work.
3. Considering the late hours and limited passes available for people to be inside the Shopping Mall after it closes, it may not be as convenient or feasible for you to drop by as we had planned earlier.

However, there will be other SIPF (Singapore International Photography Festival)projects ongoing at the Heeren Shopping Mall, so you may want to be there in the afternoon/evening with your family/friends for dinner or to look-see photography works by other people!:)

Next...
We are informed just last evening by the supporting organisations that the exhibition area has been reduced in size for us due to certain reasons and hence we have to reduce the number of works to be exhibited per person. :(:(:(

We are aware of the hard work that everyone has gone through in the selection process of photos as well as the effort put in the doing of the write-up. Hence after further discussion with two experienced personnel helping out with SIPF(Singapore International Photography Festival), whom provided us with much advice to how we should go about making the best use of the newly designated exhibition space without compromising too much on the quality of the exhibition, we are deeply apologetic to inform that we have to re-select only two of your photos. We did little changes to your write-up so as to fit the photos chosen as best as possible. The photos were chosen by a few photography majors together with the staff at NTU School of Art Media And Design, so be rest assured that the standard will not be compromised. :)

As to those photos that weren't chosen for the exhibition, we will be be putting them up onto our photographi blog for the viewing pleasure of the public soon.

We apologise for the last minute arrangements and hope to seek understanding from everyone on this matter.

Lastly... a reminder!!!
Our exhibition will be held at The Heeren Shopping Mall, Level 2, from 22nd Oct to 2nd Nov. So you can drop by anytime to view them! Do ask your family and friends along too!:)

We will be having a mass dinner together next Saturday(25th Oct), so if you do not have time to drop by before that, please do join us for dinner!(details will be further confirmed). We can also view the exhibition together, and will also pass you the printed pamphlets then :) You can keep them as a memo for the hard work put in!:)

We look forward to seeing everyone soon!:)

B&W Photography

Someone asked Chung Ping about development of B&W film. Here's his reply:

For information about how to develop your own B&W film (one of you asked), you can visit this website. Its not very difficult to play around with B&W on your own. The owner of this website sells some interesting cameras (rangefinders, TLRs, etc) and some film supplies. He is quite a nice person, personally. :)

http://www.chiifcameras.com/site2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=63&Itemid=63

Another word of advice: If you are going to buy any photography equipment (expensive ones), be sure that you do your research on pricing and technical specifications before committing. Some dealers may quote you a much higher price if they know you never do any research These salespeople knows how to see potential victims better than fortune tellers. A good place to look for pricing information is on Clubsnap. Buyers Beware!

Chung Ping :)

Some things to take note...

Hello all!~

Everyone had a hard day selecting the best 4 photos from so many good pieces of work. Good Job! Those who still cant decide on which photos to submit for exhibition yet, please send them to us latest by Monday, 6/10/2008. Remember to choose your favorite photo among the selected 4 photos to be printed in the pamphlet.

You also need to submit 1) A short description on the themes/photos (less than 100 words)
2) About yourself (less than 50 words) by next saturday, 11/10/2008.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

About yourself: What do you think about photography? What kind of photo or object captures your attention? What kind of photo do you like to take?(Nature, abstract, children, etc...) Is photography something new or has it been your passion for a long time?

Theme: Why did you choose this theme? Any special reason? How do the photos relate to the theme?

Note: Do not feel pressurized to come up with a fantastic write-up. It can be something simple. We just want to know more about yourself, your thoughts, through your short write-up about yourself and the theme :) This is to show what you as a photographer(yes, you!), will want to communicate to the public through your photos :)

We will be doing photoshop editing for your works next wedneday, 8/10/2008. The location is at ADM(School of Arts, Design and Media) in NTU, about 7pm. This is optional, but should you be interested to join us, please sms your buddy or reply to this email. You can join us for dinner at NTU too, at 6pm.

Please read following for more information about next week.

We will be doing:
1) Final confirmation of write-up on the theme and yourself.
2) Sharing of exhibition photos with fellow volunteers and particpants!
3) Exhibition details and pin-hole photos

Date : Sat, 11/10/08
Place : Sadeaf (same room)
TIme : 3pm-5pm

If there's any other questions, please sms your buddy or email us. :)

Enjoy! And have a great week ahead!~ See you! :)

Chung Ping has things to share! :)

Hi, I have some freewares and links which will be useful to all who are interested in photography. These are the info I have shared with some of u, hence i guess it will be better to share it with all.

Opanda freewares
http://www.opanda.com/en/index.html
There are a few inside the website, these 2 are free and easy to play with. I read, but can't find if it can work on a Mac. Sorry.

  • IExif - allows u to view ur camera parameters (e.g. shutter speed, aperture, flash fired, etc) in the computer. This is useful for evaluating (by yourself) what you have done when you took the picture.
  • PhotoFilter - in the older times when film were used, plastic/glass filters are placed in front of the lens to create certain effect. In modern times, when we use digital, this is much easier as we can try different digital filters on computer.

Shaped bokeh
http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_create_your_own_bokeh
http://www.diyphotography.net/removing-the-mystery-from-the-heart-shaped-bokeh
I did some of it at Changi Airport. I am not sure if this can be done on a compact camera or lenses with smaller aperture. I suggest u read the 2 links before trying them. Take note that it will be more difficult to achieve that effect if u are using a compact camera or lenses with smaller aperture, due to some technical aspect, as written in the 2nd link above.

GIMP
http://www.gimp.org/
This is a free picture editing software. Online tutorials and helps are freely available online. I use this as well. It is easy to use and features most of the things a novice would ever want. To me, photoshop is just slow and expensive.

That's all from me for the time being. Seen the pictures from most (if not all) of you. I must say that they are really good. I hope that you all enjoyed the programme as much as i did. See you all soon.

Regards
Chung Ping :)

The Spirit of Photography

The Spirit of Photography is an article by Nelson Tan. It discusses the most basic commonsense knowledge of photography, to refresh our perspectives on photography. There is nothing radical nor fresh about the points, but they remind us that good photography ultimately rest in our own hands.

Below is a summarized version of the article.
To read the full article, please click here.

1. Photography is the fusion of art and science
- To see, observe and comprehend is art;
- Reading, thinking, learning and practicing techniques is science.

Photography is unique in the sense that it depends very much on technology to carry it off, and its limits depend on both technological advances and your artistic creativity. Thus, to master photography, you have to be competent both in your artistic sense and your grasp of technology.

To train your artistic aspect, you could observe the works of others, and look at the way the others opt to express their feelings. You could also look around you for inspirations and take in the world around you. Observe and learn.

The science part is slightly more straightforward. Knowing the techniques and technicality of photography allows you an array of methods to display your creativity. You could read books, observe or ask others for help on technical issues, and then practice to master the techniques. Only then will your creativity have a vehicle from your inner mind onto an actual image.

2. Equipment are the tools to realizing your vision, not the stumbling blocks

Many of us focus too much on what our equipment cannot do, rather than what they can do. We use the lack of capability of our equipment to explain away why we cannot do certain shots, rather seeing the equipment as the tools to achieving our goals. Your attitude determines how far you equipment can bring you.

3. Spend more money on buying books, films and printing

While buying new equipment expands the horizon of possibility for photography opportunities, we need to balance it with acquiring photography knowledge and practicing. The next time you feel tempted to buy a new piece of equipment, ask yourself if it can really help improve your photography, or or can the money be better used to buy books and films. But don't take this advice to the extreme - sometimes buying new equipment can be highly motivating!

4. Your best picture is the one you've yet to take

The moment you feel that your works cannot be improved anymore is the moment that your standards start sliding backwards. Never ever think that you have been shooting the best pictures of your life, or that your pictures are good enough. Because there is always something new to learn, something to improve. Always try to outdo your own standards with your next picture, and to raise your expectations after you meet them successfully. However, be realistic and don't be overambitious, or you just might end up trying to reach for the moon and feel demoralized after that.

5. Shooting on film is like painting on a blank canvas
- You can either create a good picture or a bad one, on the same piece of film.

An unexposed film is like a blank canvas - you can either create a good picture or bad picture, on the same piece of film. When it is unexposed, it has the potential to develop into a great image or a bad one. The deciding factor is you. Your competence will decide the final results of the piece of film. By putting yourself into the equation, you will adopt a frame of mind to be more careful whenever you shoot anything. You will become more critical of what you want to shoot, and how you want to shoot it. Because you know that your decisions will determine whether the final results are qualified to be hung on a wall, or destined for the wastepaper basket.

6. Think before you shoot

Thinking involves making conscious choices at many stages, from the choice of film and lens, to the exposure and composition. Like said before, thinking will increase the probability of making a better image on the same piece of film. Since your aim in photography (I assume) is to take better images, why not exercise some thinking before you shoot, to turn a average picture into a great one? For example, thinking about what you want to emphasize in the picture will result in you searching for a better viewpoint. Takes only a second for so, but it makes a big difference. It gets easier everytime you think, and may even become second-nature.

7. There is no picture until you go out and take one
- Don't sit in your armchair imagining pictures you could take; go out and take it!

We think that by having certain gears, we are capable of producing great pictures. The problem is - it remains a capability and possibility, until we go out and do it. It is a simple fact which everyone knows - there will not be an image until you bring your equipment out there and shoot something!

We judge ourselves by what we feel we are capable of doing;
Others judge us by what we have done.
So don't just sit down there and imagine what you can do; Just do it!

8. Hindsight is always easier than foresight
- It is always easy to criticize or see how a picture worked; it is substantially more difficult to create a picture that worked at the moment of exposure.

We often look at a good picture and then analyse why it worked. Maybe it's the lighting, maybe it's the expression, or is it the composition? On the other hand, we criticise a poor picture on why it didn't work. Perhaps the snow misled the meter into underexposing? Perhaps the focus was out? Perhaps the photographer should have chosen a less distracting background?

There is nothing wrong with criticising or analysing a photo for what worked and what did not. It is a good exercise to train your visual mind to spot the mistakes and know what makes a good photo. But can you apply that knowledge to the moment prior to exposure? Are you able to use foresight to spot the potential obstacle to a great image, before pressing the shutter. It is easy to criticise a poor picture, but much harder to create a great one. Use your critic powers as you survey the scene before you, and before you press the shutter.

9. Photography is the painting and manipulation of light

Photography is derived from a Greek word, meaning "painting with light". That is to say, without light there is no picture. Quite obvious you might say.

To me, the quality of the light is the most important aspect of the process of image creation. As Jim Zuckerman wrote in his book, there is no bad subject; you just need to see them at the correct time of the day. What he meant was that - with the appropriate type of light, anything can look good. Thus, the quality of light is above all other aspects in the picture making process, though that is not to say that other aspects are not important. Do take note that there is no good or bad light, just different types of light.

Knowing the importance of light in photography, the next logical thing is how to look for and create the light that you need. Understanding light is one thing, manipulating light is another. Fortunately, there are many books on light in photography which covers the different types of light and how to make the best use of them.

10. Be harsh with yourself, go easy on others

If you want to keep on improving your skills and keep your friends, be harsh with yourself and go easy on others. This is not telling you to be hypocritical and tell them how you adore their works when deep down you think it sucks. You should be most critical of yourself and not rest on complacency, while being open-minded to others' works and being diplomatic about your comments. Harsh criticisms of other's works may not be appreciated by them, and may destroy their self-confidence. On the other hand, you should not be satisfied with your own works, and strive to emulate the better photographers around you.

11. Vision and technique go hand in hand
- Vision without technique can never be realized;
- Technique without vision leads to properly exposed rubbish.

No matter how good your concept is, there is no way for people to appreciate it if you don't have the necessary techniques to express yourself. If you have a vision but not the necessary techniques, it will never be realised. If you have the techniques but do not have a vision, your images will turn out mediocre and lack impact because there is no message in it.

12. Distinguish the difference between having read about the technique and knowing a technique
- Anyone could read about techniques; it is doing that separates the preachers and the photographers.

There is nothing wrong with being well-versed in technicalities. But putting it into practice is another story. Many people know how to do certain stuff in theory, but have never done it practically. By putting into practice your theory and analysing the results, you can see for yourself what you have done right/wrong. After all, if you call yourself a photographer, the final photograph is the thing counts isn't it? Would you rather have a head full of photography trivial knowledge, or a portfolio full of images to illustrate your photographic capability?

13. The shortest piece of advice anyone can offer you is: "Understand Light"

As mentioned just now, light forms a critical component of the image. Mastery of the knowledge for light will enable you to portray your subject in the most flattering manner possible.

Light is a complex subject matter. It can be natural or man-made. It could be harsh or soft. It could be direct or manipulated. Different subjects react differently to different types of light. It is such a complex subject that it would take a substantial book to explain every single concept. However, you can make your job much easier by observing your everyday surroundings, watching the effects of light on different textures, and how light is modified when it passes through certain materials etc. The possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.

14. Think not what you can do with the equipment you do not have; rather, think what you can do with the equipment you have

"If I had a 400 mm f/2.8 lens, I would have been able to shoot the tiger as it pounced on the helpless antelope" or "If I had a fisheye lens, I could make distorted images of the world"

Rather than dreaming about imaginary pictures which you can take with fantasy pictures, why not start off with the equipment that you have and think of the possibilities you have with them?

If it makes you feel better, think of it this way - everyone has something someone else doesn't have. If you have a EOS 50 and you're lusting after the EOS 3, think of the poor souls who just started photography and don't even have their own cameras. If you are fortunate enough to own any equipment, you should be grateful and try to maximize its potential rather than sitting around and wishing for even more equipment.

GREAT Links

Here are some useful information (recommended by Chung Ping, our guest photographer) for those who missed out on the sharing session. They are basically some guidelines and techniques to help you in photography under certain situations. BUT REMEMBER, guidelines are just guidelines. They are not hard and fast rules that you must follow strictly.

"One photo out of focus is a mistake, ten photos out of focus are an experimentation, one hundred photos out of focus are a style"

Fireworks Photography and The "Black card Trick"Metering

There are different ways a camera can do its metering. Examples are Matrix, Centre Weight, and Spot metering methods. You can refer to the instruction manual of your camera if you have any doubts on the settings.

Click here for a good read on Spot Metering.

Improving your composition

Finally, if you find yourself having difficulty sleeping at night, the following book will be a good read:

"Learning to see creatively" by Peterson, Bryan F

Our guest photographer, Chung Ping, recommends this book to people who are interested in learning more ways to see things. You don't have to buy it because many copies are available in the National Library island wide. You can use the library catalog to search.

Southern Ridges

Here is one sample of photo taken from one of our volunteers, YewMeng. There is a title, caption and a brief description of it below.
Host unlimited photos at slide.com for FREE!

Title: To the SKY

Caption: Don't you ever wonder how high into the sky you can see? Don't you ever get that feeling to look higher up? Do you feel the urge to see higher into the sky?

Why do i feel it's good: Photos don't always have to be bright and colourful. It just needs to acheive it's purpose. Whenever i look at the photo, my eyes uncontrollably look from the bottom to the top and wish it would go further =)

It's a new beginning!

We hope everyone gained some new knowledge on photograpy from the first session of the PhotograpHI program. We hope you enjoyed listening to Joel Yuen from NTU ADM as he share about his works and photography knowledge. :)

Off We Go To Little India!

A couple of weeks ago, Issac and some Farrago volunteers went on a Pre-PhotograpHI trip to Little India. The purpose of our visit there was simple - to have fun and just snap away!

Issac used a film disposable camera which I felt made the trip interesting because you won't know how the photos will turn out until you develop them.

Here are some of the photos taken by Issac!

I found the last photo particularly interesting. Anyone knows how Issac captured the reflection in that photo?

This Saturday will be our first outdoor shooting session at Southern Ridges. Have fun and capture the moment(s) because you never know what photos you can get to capture!

About PhotograpHI'08

PhotograpHI is a new initiative by Club Farrago. Through PhotograpHI, we hope that our deaf friends can pick up some basic photography skills and motivate them to pursue photography as a weekly pastime. More importantly, by sharing our thoughts on the photographs taken, our deaf friends and volunteers can get to know one another better and thus build stronger friendships.

During the 11-week programme, participants will be going for outdoor shoots and attending photography workshops and sharing sessions. At the end of the programme, there will be a photography exhibition for participants to showcase some of their works. The photographs exhibited will be based on themes which we have set for the participants. This meaningful event will also allow the public to have a better understanding of the deaf through their photographs, thus raising Deaf awareness. Participants and volunteers will prepare for the exhibition together, which will definitely be a memorable experience for participants and volunteers alike.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up for PhotograpHI and have a great time with us!

Frequently Asked Questions!

1. What is so interesting about PhotograpHI?

The PhotograpHI programme consists of outdoor shoots, sharing sessions and photography lessons. The outdoor shoots let you hone your photography skills as you have fun exploring Singapore with the volunteers. During the sharing sessions, participants and volunteers alike will share their thoughts and feelings on the photographs taken. Students from School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) will also be sharing some photography techniques with you, such as Pinhole Photography. At the end of the programme, there will be an exhibition for you to showcase your photographs.

2. Who can join?

All Hearing-Impaired who are 16 years old and above and have an interest for photography are welcomed to join! However, the course is based on a first come first serve basis. So do register early to avoid disappointment!

3. How to register and pay the registration fee?

To register, simply fill up the registration form and send to photographi08@gmail.com by 21st July 2008. After we have received your registration form, we will inform you of the bank account number to transfer your registration fees to. Remember to keep the receipt until we have verified your payment. Your registration will only be successful when we have received both your registration form and registration fee. We will pass you a receipt acknowledging your payment on the first day of the programme.

4. Where is PhotograpHI held at?

For the outdoor shoots, we will gather at the MRT station nearest to the location we are going. The sharing sessions and photography lessons will be held at SADeaf classrooms. More information will be given to you upon registration.

5. How long is the programme?

PhotograpHI is a 11-week programme that will be held every Saturday, 3pm to 530pm, from 16th August 2008 to 25th October 2008. In addition, there will be an exhibition in late October/early November.

6. What does the $20 registration fee include?

The registration fee includes notes for the photography lessons, materials for pinhole techniques and printing of photos for the exhibition ONLY. Transport fees and food for the outdoor shoots and development of OWN negative films taken during each weekly putdoor session are not included in the registration fee.

7. Do I need to bring my own camera? What if I don’t have one?

You are strongly encouraged to bring your own camera so as to familiarise yourself with the use of your own camera. You are also recommended to use a digital camera as the programme does not subsidize the development of negative films. If you do not own a camera, you may share a camera with the volunteers during the outdoor shoots.

8. Tell me more about the exhibition!

The exhibition serves as an avenue for you to showcase the photographs you have taken during PhotograpHI. In addition, we also hope to raise deaf awareness through the exhibition. Tentatively, the exhibition will held in late October/early November. Preparation for the exhibition will be done together by both participants and volunteers, which we believe will be a memorable experience for you!

Club Farrago

Club Farrago is one of the centers under the arm of the RSPHI and is located at the Singapore Association for the Deaf. Farrago, Latin for “assortment or medley", represents our volunteers' wishes, hopes and aspirations to make a difference in the lives of the Hearing Impaired (HI).

Set up in 1997, we’ve moved from providing computer courses to giving Basic Chinese Courses (CC1, CC2 and CC3) to the HIs, in view of enabling them to write and comprehend simple Chinese that they come across in their daily lives. Our Chinese Courses are conducted in lecture-style with volunteers attached to our students to mentor them. During lessons, we also play games to facilitate learning and interaction.

Besides Chinese Courses, we also organise a variety of activities, such as our annual event, "HI! Singapore", which range from Amazing Race in 2005 and 2006, Signation Sign Language Workshop in 2007 and HI T.E.A in 2008. We aim to provide a new experience for the HIs and also a platform for them to make new friends and learn new skills. The event salso serve to let volunteers have a taste of organising and planning projects as well as working in teams.

Currently, in 2008, we are organising a new photography programme called PhotograpHI.

Our weekly sessions:
Date: Every Saturday
Time: 3.00pm to 5.30 pm
